Theology After Darwin

 

These interviews were conducted at CPT pastors' symposia as part of our 2017–18 symposium series, Theology After Darwin. The interviews are meant to summarize and expand on presentations and papers given at these invite-only events. We are happy to share this content with you in interview format. The CPT fellow presentations at these symposia have been published in the sixth volume of the Bulletin of Ecclesial Theology in 2019.

 
Dr. Todd Billings of Western Seminary discusses challenges and opportunities related to articulating a theology of the atonement in a post-Darwinian West. This interview took place as part of our March 4–6 meeting of the St. Augustine Fellowship of the Center For Pastor Theologians in 2018. Dr. Billings served as a theological consultant for this event.

Wheaton College PhD Candidate Jeremy Mann discusses the de-enchantment and re-enchantment of creation in Western thought, as well as how recent trends toward describing creation as "sacramental" may not always be helpful. This interview took place at a meeting of the St. Augustine Fellowship of the CPT on March 6, 2018. Jeremy's paper will appear in Volume 6 of the Bulletin of Ecclesial Theology, due out in 2019.

Gerald Hiestand, Senior Associate Pastor at Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, IL, discusses Irenaeus's and Augustine's narrative of creation and the fall, noting how they may be more or less compatible with a Darwinian understanding of the origins of life. Gerald's paper will appear in Volume 5 of the Bulletin of Ecclesial Theology, due out in 2018.

Nathan Chang, English Pastor at Chinese Evangelical Church in Portland, OR, discusses the creational origins of human dignity, seeking common ground among Christians with differing views on creation and interpretation of Genesis 1–3. This interview took place at a meeting of the St. Augustine Fellowship of the CPT on March 6, 2018. Nathan's paper will appear in Volume 6 of the Bulletin of Ecclesial Theology, due out in 2019.
